Whether it is medicine or any other profession, the financial challenges remain consistent for all – how do we keep and grow our money? Many feel that making money is the easy part, while holding on to it is another story altogether. The fact remains that there are many forces that pull on our hard earned income every single day – taxes, living expenses, social pressures, and desires – to name a few. Early in my medical career, I often visited the doctor’s lounge during lunch, and quietly listened from afar to the heartfelt conversations being had by some of the senior physicians at the hospital. As I chowed down on my turkey sandwich, I was amazed to hear just how many physicians were behind the eight ball when it came to savings and retirement. I remember thinking, “How could this be? The great Dr. Jones, who was a well-respected surgeon with a huge patient base, had money issues? But he wears a Rolex, drives a luxury car, and lives in a high-end community!” I indeed was naïve at the time. What I eventually figured out was that at times these financial stresses could be attributed to lavish lifestyles and the pressure of having to showcase a certain status in society (“Keeping up with the Joneses” if you may). However, in other instances, it was due to poor investment choices or major events such as being hammered by the 2008 financial crisis. Regardless, I knew that I needed to be knowledgeable and vigilant when it came to my financial planning because I personally was looking to have an entirely different conversation in the doctor’s lounge!
Over the years, I have invested in various assets such as a pharmacy, surgery center, medical private practice, stocks, mutual funds, etc. All of these opportunities provided invaluable experience and knowledge. But as I continued to study finance and my own personal investment performances, I quickly realized the impact of volatility on my long-term success. My pursuit for an investment that provided principal protection, stable & increasing yield, and equity growth, led me to the world of commercial multifamily (apartments) – a reliable alternative to traditional, volatile, and low-yield investments. Investing in a multifamily apartment building is investing in a hard asset – one whose value will not dissolve overnight due to a scandal or a trading floor rumor – an evergreen investment.
Throughout this website, you will find an evidence based approach to commercial multifamily investing. Just as evidence based medicine promotes consistency of treatment and optimal outcomes, evidence based investing delivers more consistent and optimal returns.
